Pregnancy , also known as gestation , is the time during which one or more offspring develops inside a woman . [4] A multiple pregnancy involves more than one offspring, such as with twins . [13] Pregnancy can occur by sexual intercourse or assisted reproductive technology . [6] A pregnancy may end in a live birth , abortion , or miscarriage , though access to safe abortion care varies globally. [14] Childbirth typically occurs around 40 weeks from the start of the last menstrual period (LMP). [4] [5] This is just over nine months , where each month averages 31 days. [4] [5] When measured from fertilization it is about 38 weeks. [5] An embryo is the developing offspring during the first eight weeks following fertilization, after which, the term fetus is used until birth. [5] ...

Immunization is the process whereby a person is made immune or resistant to an infectious disease, typically by the administration of a vaccine. Vaccines stimulate the body’s own immune system to protect the person against subsequent infection or disease. Immunization is a proven tool for controlling and eliminating life-threatening infectious diseases and is estimated to avert between 2 and 3 million deaths each year. It is one of the most cost-effective health investments, with proven strategies that make it accessible to even the most hard-to-reach and vulnerable populations. It has clearly defined target groups; it can be delivered effectively through outreach activities; and vaccination does not require any major lifestyle change. Culled from World Health Organization.

What is diabetes? Diabetes is the condition in which the body does not properly process food for use as energy. Most of the food we eat is turned into glucose, or sugar, for our bodies to use for energy. The pancreas, an organ that lies near the stomach, makes a hormone called insulin to help glucose get into the cells of our bodies. When you have diabetes, your body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't use its own insulin as well as it should. This causes sugars to build up in your blood. This is why many people refer to diabetes as “sugar.” Diabetes can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and lower-extremity amputations. Diabetes is the seventh leading cause of death in the United States. How prevalent is diabetes among blacks? • Blacks are 1.7 times as likely to develop diabetes as whites • The prevalence of diabetes among blacks has quadrupled during the past 30 years • Among blacks age 20 and older,...

A stroke is a medical condition in which poor blood flow to the brain results in cell death . [5] There are two main types of stroke: ischemic , due to lack of blood flow, and hemorrhagic , due to bleeding . [5] Both result in parts of the brain not functioning properly. [5] Signs and symptoms of a stroke may include an inability to move or feel on one side of the body, problems understanding or speaking , dizziness , or loss of vision to one side . [2] [3] Signs and symptoms often appear soon after the stroke has occurred. [3] If symptoms last less than one or two hours it is known as a transient ischemic attack (TIA) or mini-stroke. [3] A hemorrhagic stroke may also be associated with a severe headache . [3] The symptoms of a stroke can be permanent. [5] Long-term complications may include pneumoni...

Lifecycle The natural history of malaria involves cyclical infection of humans and female Anopheles mosquitoes. In humans, the parasites grow and multiply first in the liver cells and then in the red cells of the blood. In the blood, successive broods of parasites grow inside the red cells and destroy them, releasing daughter parasites (“merozoites”) that continue the cycle by invading other red cells. The blood stage parasites are those that cause the symptoms of malaria. When certain forms of blood stage parasites (gametocytes, which occur in male and female forms) are ingested during blood feeding by a female Anopheles mosquito, they mate in the gut of the mosquito and begin a cycle of growth and multiplication in the mosquito. After 10-18 days, a form of the parasite called a sporozoite migrates to the mosquito’s salivary glands. When the Anopheles mosquito takes a blood meal on another human, anticoagulant saliva is injected together...

Typhoid Typhoid fever is a systemic infection caused by Salmonella Typhi, usually through ingestion of contaminated food or water. The acute illness is characterized by prolonged fever, headache, nausea, loss of appetite, and constipation or sometimes diarrhoea. Symptoms are often non-specific and clinically non-distinguishable from other febrile illnesses. However, clinical severity varies and severe cases may lead to serious complications or even death. It occurs predominantly in association with poor sanitation and lack of clean drinking water. According to the most recent estimates, between 11 and 21 million cases and 128 000 to 161 000 typhoid-related deaths occur annually worldwide. A similar but often less severe disease, paratyphoid fever, is caused by Salmonella Paratyphi A and B (or uncommonly Paratyphi C). Three typhoid vaccines are currently recommended by WHO for control of endemic and epidemic typhoid fever: an injectable typhoid conjugate va...
